Navigation systems in cars have long since ceased to serve only for convenience, but are central safety aspects in increasingly dense traffic. This is also the reason why navigation systems - and more and more other assistance systems - are becoming mandatory in new cars.

With the focus on "Interactive Simulation Systems", we would like to specifically expand the application of numerical models in the field of water management: Building on existing models, we create interactive simulation systems that are used for training and education, but above all as assistance systems, e.g. for the operation of power plants or polder systems are used.

When developing interactive simulation and assistance systems, we can use our own models, but we can in fact also build on any existing model. We would be happy to carry out an analysis with you of how your "static" models can be expanded into modern, interactive systems.

We organize and support spontaneous measurements to supplement your data

In many projects, we see that spontaneous, additional measurements and recordings are a valuable help when working on projects. Although there are regular hydrographic recordings in practically all Central European rivers, spontaneous recordings can provide valuable information, especially if they are carried out in addition to the schedule of regular recordings.

We have - also because we were partly involved in the development or introduction of measuring systems - experience and networks in the field of echo sounder, ADCP, multibeam sonography and drone recordings. We are happy to organize and accompany measurement campaigns, using partner companies at home and abroad (e.g., Ocean Maps for multibeam sonography, RDI for ADCP and Hydrotec for drone data).

Simulation and training system for the Lower Neckar

Securing knowledge - passing on knowledge - simulation for the hydropower plants

As a new approach to securing and passing on knowledge, EnBW AG commissioned the development of a pilot system for a simulation and training system for hydropower plants on the lower Neckar.

The simulation system was created for the approximately 55 km long section of the Neckar from Guttenbach to Schwabenheim. There are seven power plants and six lock systems in this section. In the simulation system, the operation of turbines and weir systems can be played interactively for any hydrological scenario.

The use of the simulation system for education and training makes it possible to gather experience within a very short time, which - because the corresponding events are very rare - can only be gathered over many years without simulation.

After developing the first training simulator for the Flumenthal hydropower plant on the Rhine (CH) almost 20 years ago in cooperation with Rittmeyer AG, we see training tools more than ever as valuable options for the sustainable training of power plant personnel and increasing safety:
We are seeing - currently due to demographics - at many power plant companies a major change in personnel and, associated with this, the possible loss of knowledge that has been built up over many years.

We support the safeguarding and transfer of knowledge with interactive simulation systems. The interaction promotes - in the sense of "serious gaming" - the immediate recognition and understanding of cause and effect, of possibilities and of things that are not possible.

With our DINOs - an abbreviation for "Dynamic Implementation for Nifty Operation" - we deliberately go our own way: We rely on short development times, rapid availability, concentration on the essentials and thus an excellent cost / benefit ratio for our customers .

VIRTUAL RIVER 2D - Integration of HYDRO_AS-2D

Extension for all applications that require a 2D simulation

By integrating HYDRO_AS-2D as a 2D model, we are expanding the focus of VIRTUAL RIVER on all those applications in which extensive flooding and flow processes, where the flow paths are not known a priori, are in the foreground.

Classic applications, in which 2D modeling is valuable and useful, should therefore be seen in connection with polder control, flood management and, above all, with the preparation for extreme events.

Software update after 13 years

VIRTUAL RIVER - Update from version 2.0 to 4.0 for power plants on the Aare

In connection with updates to the training simulators for the Ruppoldingen and Gösgen power plants (operator Alpiq, Aare, CH), VIRTUAL RIVER was also updated in the simulator.

With the change to VIRTUAL RIVER 4.0, the previous system VIRTUAL RIVER 2.0 was replaced, whereby the hydrodynamic models developed with FLORIS by ETH Zurich could be kept almost unchanged.

The extended use of VIRTUAL RIVER 2.0 underlines how sustainable and robust the system was designed and implemented.

SCIETEC - the vision of "science & technology"

Young scientists test new approaches as a basis for technically robust applications

A central feature of our work is that we always want to bring new scientific approaches to our solutions. The "new" solution per se is never in the foreground - it is always about the added value for our customers and for a better solution in the matter itself.

We used to have the connection between science and practice explicitly in our company name SCIETEC and we were able to bring our vision into many projects: The online model for the Lech, the development of Virtual River and the MPC pilot system for the Main are just three of the many realized projects.

We are currently working with a group of young scientists who want to test modern mathematical methods on concrete water management tasks. This involves - initially in internal projects and in master's theses - e.g. AI and MPC to optimize the operation of power plant chains or digital twins for early warning in the event of data errors or dam breaks.

The first and immediate connection point for our cooperation is the integration of HYDRO_AS-2D in VIRTUAL RIVER 4.0.

The cooperation between Hydrotec and GR-Consult will go far beyond software integration:
The large thematic overlap of the business areas results in beneficial synergy effects and active cooperation is planned for all areas in which the operational use of models and model systems is in the foreground.

Thanks to the cooperation, both partners have access to expertise, resources and programs that significantly expand our possibilities - and thus the benefits for our customers.

FLORIS - a new framework for prooved numerics

A core product from the software history of ETH is being revised

We have a 30-year history of friendly cooperation with the ETH and the employees of the VAW. This began when the first control module for in-depth modeling of power plants was written in 1993. In 2000 we took over the development and sales of FLORIS on the basis of a cooperation agreement.

After FLORIS is in use as a central element in the operational flood forecast, we have been commissioned by several flood intelligence services and the Verbundgesellschaft as well as VHP with the IT technical revision of FLORIS. FLORIS is being completely restructured and can also be integrated directly into higher-level programs as a DLL in the future.

By revising FLORIS, we secure the investments of the flood intelligence services in Austria and Bavaria and create a new sustainable basis for further developments.

VIRTUAL RIVER for retention basins on the Emscher

Test system for the optimization and testing of the control of the outlet structures

After DHI had accompanied the conception and design of the retention basins in the Mengede and Ellinghausen network for years, GR-Consult took over the models in a system with VIRTUAL RIVER.

By embedding the models created with MIKE1D in VIRTUAL RIVER, a test system is available with which the real control modules can be tested and approved for any hydrological-hydraulic conditions.

During tests and acceptance, the fully programmed controls (Siemens S7) can communicate with VIRTUAL RIVER via OPC-UA. VIRTUAL RIVER provides all the data that is also available for the real retention basin.

Flood forecasting system Leitha

Work according to the master plan - comprehensive flood forecast in Lower Austria completed

After the catastrophic floods of 2002 on the Danube and many of its tributaries, the HD Niederösterreich under HR Labut created a master plan for the complete and Lower Austria-wide reorganization of the flood forecast systems.

With the completion of the flood forecast system for the Leitha, developed jointly with HD Burgenland, the last open point in this master plan was completed.

We are proud that we were allowed to accompany the implementation of the master plan from the beginning and that we were able to contribute to the success of this major project through modeling, IT competence and project management. Our special thanks go to all ladies and gentlemen in the office of the Lower Austrian state government for the long-term trust and the excellent cooperation.

Flood management for gravel mining

Flood forecast and information system for safe operation in the flooded area of ​​the Danube

The gravel mining areas of Welser Kieswerke Treul GmbH on the Danube are located in the floodplains of the Danube and are therefore exposed to particular danger. It is important that measures have to be taken when there is no danger for the majority of the Danube neighbors due to the existing HW protection dams.

As part of a pilot project, GR-Consult has developed a system that enables a reliable assessment of the hazard situation for the mining areas. As a basis, data are used that are available as part of the official flood forecast for the central gauges on the Danube. The specific risk for the mining areas is derived from these with specific functions.

The basis for the decision on the measures to be taken is a traffic light system that differentiates between "absolute safety" (green), "possible hazard" (yellow) and "any flooding that may occur" (red).

FLUX Operational - version 2.0

New version of FLUX Operational simplifies the integration into forecast systems

After we created a system with FLUX Operational (FOP) in 2016 that was optimized for the requirements of operational flood forecasting, version 2.0 further simplifies the embedding of FLORIS-based 1D models.

As a significant innovation, FOP 2.0 includes the ability to control partial models internally, directly and configure them jointly. FOP 2.0 has been completely re-implemented in C # and integrates those previously distributed functions over several auxiliary programs.

With new collaborations we have created a broad basis for our work in the past two years, and with VIRTUAL RIVER 4.0 GR-Consult and DHI have completed a first joint product.

We took this as an occasion for an event at which we wanted to provide space: for lectures, discussions and dialogues on water management 4.0.

After the cooperation between DHI Wasy and GR-Consult had already been agreed in an LOI in July 2018, the partnership agreement with DHI (DK) followed in January 2019.

With this partnership agreement, GR-Consult officially becomes a development partner of DHI and with the OEM agreement for MIKE1D, which has also been concluded, the course is set for global sales of VIRTUAL RIVER 4.0.

IT-technical revision secures the expertise built up over decades in the long term

It may surprise some - but old computer programs and "old" programming languages ​​are still the backbones of many applications in many areas of technology and science. At NASA, for example, a large part of the "mission critical code" is still there written in FORTRAN and in 2017 NASA launched an international competition to secure this legacy.

At GR-Consult, we draw on both of our programming expertise, on almost four decades of programming and software design and - thanks to our young employees - on the most modern development approaches and design concepts.

Even in the flood forecast, many components in the established systems play a central role. Often there are comparatively small programs in data processing, but sometimes there are also programs with tens of thousands of lines of code.

With the revision of all interface programs created since 2002 for the connection of the numerical models in FEWS, GR-Consult has secured these small, important components. They contain many detailed and special solutions and the particular value of the update is that we can modernize the entire system without changing long-established processes and interfaces.

VIRTUAL RIVER 4.0 - Available from October 1st, 2018

Re-engineering and extension

Version 4.0 of VIRTUAL RIVER is a completely revised and newly programmed version of VIRTUAL RIVER. VIRTUAL RIVER 4.0 contains Mike1D from DHI as its numerical core, whereby FLORIS.2000 is also supported in the sense of compatibility with previous versions.

With the release in October 2018, we will initially start with the English version. Versions in German and French will follow.

Software for water management

We strengthen our team

The conception and development of software for water management have been a core competence for over 20 years and we will continue to focus our work on it. The spectrum of our work ranges from the creation of individual tools for flood forecasting and warning to the development of products such as VIRTUAL RIVER.

To be prepared for new requirements and be able to cover all IT-technical requirements in-house, we have strengthened our team with Bernhard Heinzelreiter.

Flux.VIRTUAL RIVER is the world's only commercially available package for real-time simulation of rivers.

A special feature of the new development will be that we are also working on cooperation with DHI and thus want to put Flux.VIRTUAL RIVER on a completely new and broad basis.

GR-Consult takes over all rights to the developments of SCIETEC again

In September, GR-Consult bought back the rights to Flux and FLORIS from PÖYRY. We have thus created the basis to actively pursue the development and sales of the products developed by SCIETEC again.

With the development of Flux.OPERATIONAL, we have developed a product that significantly simplifies the use of 1D models in forecasting systems and thus represents a sustainable basis for safeguarding our customers' previous investments.

One year of GR-Consult

A review

After a more or less "flying start", GR-Consult worked on some 30 projects in the first year. The focus was on floods and numerical modeling. And through the shared office with Arkade planungs GmbH in June, the course was set for new topics and tasks.

In addition to the formal successor, GR-Consult also sees itself in a direct line with SCIETEC in terms of content and strategy and we will continue all work and content with the same commitment and the same goals.

After Günther Reichel decided at the beginning of the year to switch back to self-employment with SCIETEC, the basis for stable and sustainable continuity in all projects and areas of responsibility was immediately created.

In this sense, GR-Consult will be unrestrictedly available in all projects and - where required - also be available in a leading role. Conversely, at PÖYRY, the same team will continue to work on all topics as it has done so far.
